Total cleanup of your Battlefield 2 / PR installation:
If you have weird error messages, punkbuster problems or frequently CTD's (crash to desktop), try these steps to fix it:
- Uninstall PR (and other BF2 mods)
- Uninstall BF2 addons and BF2
- Use the explorer to manually delete the /Program Files/EA GAMES/Battlefield 2 folder
- Use the explorer to manually delete your Battlefield profile (My Documents/Battlefield 2). Write down your video/sound/controls settings to reapply them later. Deleting the Profile is very important.
- Open a DOS command prompt (Start, Programs, Accessories, Command prompt). You need to start this box with admin rights. Enter "chkdsk /F C:" (without the quotes) to force a check of the disk on the next restart. Answer the questions with yes (y ENTER). Type "exit" or just close the command prompt window.
- Restart your computer. Your harddisk will be checked for logical errors (and automatically fixed) during the boot. This may take some minutes.
- Install BF2 (plus addons, if you have some). Make sure you have the serial number. If you have Windows 7, uncheck the installation of Punkbuster. It doesn't install properly.
- If you use Windows 7 and left out the installation of Punkbuster, download PBSVC and manually install the Punkbuster services. If there are remains of old PB, deinstall first. Run this Program as Administrator.
- Download and install the latest BF2 Patch 1.5(download)
- Download and install PR Client Part 1 and Part 2 (two seperate downloads!)
- Download pbsetup and manually update punkbuster. Punkbuster can usually auto-update itself, but it fails sometimes. Use this program, to make sure you have the latest version installed.
- Defragment your harddisk (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter)
- Download and install latest video drivers (ATI, NVIDIA)
- Download and update your DirectX 9 installation. Even if you already have DirectX 9 or 11!
- Retrieve your account and reapply your video/sound/control settings
- Make sure you start PR with the supplied desktop shortcut (or with Battlefield 2/mods/pr.exe) Don't use BF2.EXE or the BF2-Shortcut!
Additional tips:
- Don't overclock your CPU, RAM or video card. If you have CTD's, bluescreen or freeze problems, your very first step should be to set all clocks and voltages to default! Even if you think your computer runs stable overclocked. You can reenable it, when you fixed all problems.
- Try to get 4GB RAM. This usually reduce lag. The lastest PR is much more demanding to your computer than previous versions.
- For more stability set textures to medium (even on a high end computer). This can reduce lag and even CTD's! Try this by all means!
- Don't use Autohotkey (AHK) or Logitech G15 keyboard macros, as they are banned by Punkbuster. You can be kicked for "Disallowed Program/driver [119502]".
- Disable or close all unnecessary background programs. They can cause lag and/or reduce the available memory. Under Vista change your windows theme from aero to classic and disable the windows sidebar. Additionally, you could disable the 'windows search' service, if you don't need it.
- Check the heat of your computer. Many computer randomly crash just because of too much heat. For a short test, run the computer with an open case and put a fan in front of it. If it didn't crash anymore, you should clean the dust from the case and fans and get additional (or stronger) case fans. If it's not heat related, check your power supply, as they are often the weakest part in a computer. Replace it with a quality brand (quality doesn't mean exaggerated Watts).
